The Opening Ceremony marks the beginning of the ELSA LX MUN. It is a moment of celebration, but at the same time a moment for an urgent reflection on contemporary international issues, and in the role of the United Nations in today’s world.

Ms. Virgínia Brás Gomes
In addition to a career in public administration, being currently a Senior Social Policy Advisor in the General Directorate for Social Security in Portugal, Ms. Virgínia Brás Gomes is an independent expert on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. She is the present Chair of the Committee, having also served as vice-chair in 2009-2010 and as Rapporteur in 2013-2014.
Doctor Rui Barroso de Moura
In addition to a law degree (2014) and a Scientific master’s in law (conclusion of the curricular part in 2016) from the University of Lisbon, Rui Barroso de Moura also has a degree in mechanical engineering from the Higher Technical Institute of Lisbon (1986), a post graduate degree in management from ISCTE (1987), a MBA from NOVA SBE (1988) and a Doctorate in management from the Higher Institute of Economy and Management (UTL) (2006). Besides his stellar academic career which highlights a balance between technology, economics and law, Rui Barroso de Moura is President of Negotia, SGPS, S.A., (Private Equity), since 2000, having also been member of the board of WeBrain Digital (2000-2008), among other positions.
Currently an Of Counsel for PLMJ, one of Portugal’s biggest law firms, in the Arbitration practice area, Barroso de Moura is coordinating an advanced course entitled “Artificial Intelligence & Law” that intends to understand (and demystify) Artificial Intelligence from a legal perspective, addressing topics such as Ethics, Humanity, respect for the individual, and the role of Artificial in the individual’s employment, social and family relationships.
